Shain Carpenter

Shain Carpenter is a fourth generation African Nova Scotian that was born and raised in the small communities of Jordantown and Acaciaville in the Digby area. Being raised there showed him the difficulties and hurdles that youth face from living in a small rural town and how it is important to seek support from the people in your community to help you succeed.

Shain has been involved in trying to help his fellow African Nova Scotians ever since he was a student at Digby Regional High School and during that time he worked for the Black Educators Association as a tutor to African Canadian students at Digby Elementary School. After graduating high school, Shain was accepted into the Business Administration program at the University of New Brunswick and would then attend NSCC for the Human Services program. He relocated back to Digby in 2020 and upon his return he learned of the different difficulties that youth are still facing in the Digby area, and was motivated to find a way to give support and to aid students in the same way that he was provided with support when he was a student.

He returned to working as a Tutor for the BEA in 2021 as well as becoming a Teacher's Assistant for the TCRCE. Shain then transitioned to becoming a Child & Youth Care Practitioner for TCRCE and along with three co-workers they helped with establishing the new Digby Alternative High School that began in 2022. Through these positions Shain had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of students whose learning and social functioning levels have covered a wide spectrum. He has provided individual counselling to students regarding behavior, academics, mental health, physical health, and career development. In addition to the previously stated roles, Shain was also a Medical Tutor for a grade 12 student at DRHS who due to injuries had not been able to attend school for his final year and Shain was vital in aiding this student in receiving their diploma.

In addition to his work with TCRCE, Shain also volunteers his time to work with multiple groups and committees in the area whose focus is finding ways to help youth and students in Digby. A few of these groups include:

• School Advisory Council (Currently the Vice-Chair)

• Cultural Leadership & Mentor Group

• Schools Plus Regional Advisory Council

• Leadership Table Group

• Health Promoting Schools Team

• Multi-Tiered System of Supports Team

• Teaching Support Team

Shain has received training and certifications from many different programs, some of these include:

• Options to Anger

• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention

• Guys’ Group Facilitation

Shain’s adaptability has allowed him to work in many different environments, in addition to working with people from various backgrounds. As a Student Success Coach, he has used his strong desire to help his students with their academic, personal, and social needs.
